According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) almost 80% of child safety seats are badly fitted or misused.

The most common errors are harness straps that were loose and safety belt attachments that are incorrectly fastened. These mistakes are defined by the NHTSA as 'critical' because there is a possibility of serious injury in the event of an accident. So most baby safety seats are not nearly as safe as parents think, and many babies are at risk.

How then can you be sure that your baby will be safe in the car?

First, make sure that you are using the right type of seat for your baby's age and weight, and that it is facing the right way. Some multi-purpose seats can be fitted to face either forward or backward and the fitting will change as your child grows. Babies under one year old and under 20 lb in weight should have rear-facing seats. But note that all child safety seats, whether forward or backward facing, should be fitted on the back seat of the car.

It is also possible to buy infant seats for young babies. These are designed to be rear-facing only, so you will need a new seat when your child gets bigger. However, they will be a better fit for your newborn baby and they are easier to store and carry, being smaller. You can carry your sleeping baby around in his or her safety seat.

If you prefer, you can buy a convertible seat that can be adapted to fit babies and toddlers. Convertible seats are larger and heavier and you are more likely to leave them in the car all of the time. They must be fitted in the rear facing position for young babies and then when the child turns one or weighs over 20 lb, the seat can be turned around to face the front. A convertible seat will usually hold children up to 40 lb.

But whatever type of seat you select, the most important point is to fit it correctly. You must read both the instructions that come with the car seat and the owner's manual for your car. First, make sure that you have the seat firmly and correctly buckled into the car. Then make sure you know how to fit and secure the harness straps that hold your baby inside the seat.

Don't guess - have your baby's seat checked by a qualified technician if you are not 100% sure that you have it correct. US visitors can go to http://www.seatcheck.org to find a child safety seat inspection center near you.

If you are considering buying a used seat or accepting one as a gift, consider the age and condition of the seat. Seats that have been used by several children in a family, or seats that have been in an accident, may be worn or broken and not safe for a baby any more. The label should tell you the date of manufacture and you should not use a seat that is more than five years old. Make sure that you have the manufacturer's instructions and that all the parts are included. If the instructions have been lost, you may be able to find a copy online, but make sure you have the right manual for your exact safety seat. If not, do not use the seat, even if it was a gift. It is not worth taking the chance.

Above all remember that in an accident, your child's life depends on the baby car seat.

Child Safety and Online Dangers Saving Children Part 2

E-mails

Children should be advised to avoid unrevealing of the parental controls. Likewise, children should be taught to write e-mails or correspond on the Internet without utilizing content or images that may cause harm for others. Life is a two-way street. What you don’t want someone to do to your child, respect others and conform to this method. Gossip, slander, and rioting sometimes are a part of a child’s makeup. Be sure to teach your child how respecting others goes a longer way than disrespecting other peoples rights. Furthermore, parental controls should be setup on all incoming and outgoing e-mails if possible.

Popup Blockers are safe guarders that will prevent unwanted websites from popping up on your screen. While children surf the Internet they may stumble in areas that pose harmful threats. The websites may include pop ups which depict harmful content and/or images. The Popup Blockers will protect your child from unwanted images and/or content. Be advised and advise your children that some websites are not good for anyone to visit. Some websites online include racism, nudity, slander, malicious content/images, hate, and more. Inform your child that these harmful contents and images are pollution to the world, yet unfortunately the images and content exists, therefore we have to continue staying on guard.

NOTE: If you use ‘we,’ ‘us,’ ‘our,’ and similar words instead of ‘I,’ ‘me,’ and so on, your child is much more apt to comply. Since children are, technology advanced these days they may know how to override the parental controls.

Children often frequent Chat Rooms, be advised that what goes on in those rooms many times is unsuitable to humankind let alone a child. Therefore, include Parental Discretion in this area on the Internet to protect your child. Also, use Parental Discretion and Controls at the newsgroups area online. Stay safe!

Child Safety and Online Dangers Saving Children Part 1

Saving children is becoming a big issue, since children are our future. One of the most difficult notions of child safety is that children often feel like parents are violating their privacy while in actuality the parent is safeguarding their child. Parents should never allow room for leniency while dealing with child safety although the children might feel oppressive.

The risks posed on the Internet make it impossible to avoid harm, unless a parental environment is set and starts at elementary working through high school. If your children have a platform of safety likely throughout their life, they will walk with respect through a world of dangers. The start might include parental guidance from start to finish, yet that parental guidance extends to added measures to provide security and safety. Therefore, taking advantage of the child safety features offered on the Internet could provide parents support.

Keeping it positive is the best solution in providing child safety. Instead of you as parents making all the rules, encourage your children to participate in setting those rules. Your children should not make final decisions, unless the decisions prove fruitful. Encouraging your children as well as asking them to join in child safety, rule negotiation will lead the child in respecting your decisions.

How to protect with tools
The tools over the Internet comprise Spam Blockers, Popup Blockers, E-mails, History Features, and more. Taking advantage of these features can provide parents support while protecting their children. The Spam Blockers will help prevent unwanted e-mails from overlapping yours and your children’s mailboxes. Some of the Spam Mails include harmful content, as well could have viruses attached. Therefore, you will need a Spam Filter that will protect your child from harmful images and content through e-mails.

Child Safety and Online Dangers Reducing Risks Part 2

The Internet is not only a place for learning, communicating, et cetera; also, the net is a place where predators surf. In the world, you have thieves, rapist, murderers, et cetera, which you may not always come face to face with the culprit in the real world: However, just like the world, the Internet has all types of predators. The downside…with advanced technology, predators can watch you in the comforts of your own home. You will not even know until he or she hits you. All the person needs is access to your IP Address, a bit of personal information, some technical equipment and the culprit is well on his way to gaining access of your life.

Hackers can obtain information to utilize to their advantage, yet hackers are not the only predator that lurks behind the screen. A noted Computer Security Analyst, Dorothy Denning stated: “Completely secured systems are not possible, but the risk can be reduced considerably, probably to a level commensurate with the value of the information stored on the systems and threat posed by both hackers and insiders.”

Media, digital imaging, and other devices have made it possible for a person to view persons in their home.

Child safety is essential. Children are subjected to many influences and are often easily swayed. To learn how you can protect your child from online dangers, take the time to read rules for children, online safety tips and more. Children require a degree of privacy; however, it is essential that you as a parent monitor your child’s activities online. Let the child know that you are aware of the dangers, and that you are not invaded the child’s privacy, rather taking the precautions to protect your child while online.

How to protect your child from online dangers includes open communication. Make it convenient for your child to communicate with you. If your child appears upset over something that happens online, in a loving manner approach the child without accusing him or her, and find the underlying cause of the problem. If you suspect any activities online that is geared toward your child, REPORT it immediately. Reporting crime is fighting crime!

Child Safety and Online Dangers Reducing Risks Part 1

It is important to learn how to provide your child safety while online, since the dangers can lead to fatalities. Government officials, caring writers, and many others are producing information that will help you to take the steps in protecting your child from online dangers.

//-->

The Internet has valuable tools and features that make it convenient for anyone to go online and find nearly anything in the world they desire.

Chat rooms are one of the areas online where children frequent. In the chat, rooms are pedophiles, serial killers and rapists, and the list does not stop here. The chat rooms were structured as a compliment to Bell, and here is where many people visit while utilizing alias to communicate. People from around the globe utilize chat rooms day and night to land a date, conduct business, chat with friends, and so forth. At what time a person enters a chat room, first they select from a list of features before entering a room. For example, the person will select from a list of titled chat rooms, such as movies, romance, interracial relationships, gay chat, and so forth. Often times the titles are mere names, yet represent something different. People will often use the chat area as a cyber platform rather than communicate the intended subject.

Be aware! Predators prey on children while employing the chat room as a device to snarl his or her victims. Often a predator will manipulate the child, making the child believe that he or she is speaking with someone of his or her own age. After gaining confidence, the predator then moves in for his intended purpose.

Child Safety and Online Dangers Protecting Children with Mental Disorders

Who are the predators?
Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapist, rapist, pedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves, and so on. Predators often have mental illnesses that present them from functioning properly in society. Children with mental disorders are preys of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators them self. In fact, the distributor of one of the most dangerous viruses online came from an eighteen-year old from England.

Dangers mental illnesses
Not everyone with a mental disorder is a threat to society. Generally, predators with mental disorders are plagued with sociopath, psychopath, anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While few other mental illnesses pose threats to our society, this is the overall list of potential dangers that lurk on the streets and over the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers
Never treat your child as he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child special, yet avoid treating the child as he/she is retarded, since most mental ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children abide by and stick with the rules. Do not leave room for leniency when danger is present. Teach your child to respect by showing respect your self.

Children with dangerous mental disorders will often engage in pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it difficult as a parent to protect your child. It is important that you enforce the laws. Never put your self in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous diagnosis may cause you harm. If the child refuses to listen to you bring the law into the picture and make sure that the law does their job to help you enforce the laws. You may pay court fees and go through headaches, but I promise you it will benefit you in the end. As a mother raising two boys with dangerous mental illnesses, I can tell you it isn’t easy but it can be done.

Unfortunately, children with mental disorders are brilliant minds that can get past any parental controls most times, and will do so without you knowing. Take extra time than normal to monitor your child’s behaviors while online. Teach your child that giving out personal information is restricted and encourage them to request your permission while considering giving name, phone numbers, or other information online.

Leave room for your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family communication that involves them. Encourage the children to defend their safety by encouraging them to report any crime committed against them.

One of the hardest things you’ll ever do while raising a child with psychopathic tendencies, traits, or illness is teaching him/her to stay away from violent images, content, and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them clear of this trash. Still, it can be done if you show no fear and set a good example for the child to follow.

It is important that you leave the chains of communication open. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories, and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be amazed of the wisdom children with certain mental disorders hold if you only listen.

The best advice I can give while dealing with children with major disorders, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety tips for children with mental disorders seek advise from a qualified counselor.

Note: Children learn what they see and hear.

Child Safety and Online Dangers Newsgroups Part 2

How are newsgroups dangerous?

Newsgroups that do not have a moderated platform often contain illicit content. Some of the conversational newsgroups may contain explicit materials. The visual newsgroups could include nudity, or illicit pictures. The extremist newsgroups may contain hate content, such as racial remarks, quotes, etc. If you child frequents newsgroups, it is wise to have filters installed on your computer to protect your child, since children can download pictures from these sites, or else read the material.

One of the largest concerns around the world is child pornography. Children subjected to this harmful content can lead to serious complications. Filters are ideal for protecting children from visiting areas online that pose potential harms.

Some of the other areas online where children frequent could pose potential dangers. Children often visit chat rooms, bulletin boards, as well as many other areas on the Internet, including e-mails. One of the best things you can do is setup child safety and enforce that those safety blocks remain untouched. Children curious, tend to unlock the Parental Controls, Popup Blockers, and so forth. If you have AOL, you can take advantage of the tools offered, which will block sites that pose potential dangers.

To get started, together we are going to setup Parental Controls.

Step 1: Go to the tools menu, and click Safety
Step 2: Once the box opens, click on the e-mail address, which your child utilizes. You will see a list of usernames to select, and once you spot your child’s alias, or name, click on it.
Step 3: Click on “Edit Web Control” and follow steps
Step 4: Click on “Edit IM Control” and follow steps
Step 5: Click on “Edit E-mail Control” and follow steps
Step 6: Click on “Edit Chat Control” and follow the steps
Step 7: Click the “Edit Time Online” if you want to decrease the child’s time spent on the Internet.
Step 8: Click the “Edit AOL Guardian: At this area you can create a guardian protected e-mail for your child. Be aware that if your child has your password and username, he/she can reset the controls, as well as create another e-mail account.

It depends on your Internet provider as how to set the settings to safeguard your children, however most have easy-to-follow steps that will guide you through the process. For more information on child safety controls, contact your local Internet provider.

Child Safety and Online Dangers Newsgroups Part 1

The newsgroups are one of the areas children visit online. In these rooms, they have censored and uncensored activities that go on every day. The selection of newsgroups includes German, Get, English, PC Games, Premium, Swedish, Moderated, and so forth. As you notice the PC Games would attack children to these rooms, yet what goes on in there?

Game lovers include children. The PC Games at the newsgroups are discussed on a Usenet Server. The discussion in the newsgroup rooms will cover X-Box, PS1-2-3, Nintendo, as well as other games. The topic is intended to discuss Internet games. You can type in a keyword to access all games online. Games have been in existence for decades. Yet, most of the games today are violent, nudity, and so on. Thus, the newsroom is on of the larger pacifiers in the world that entertain children of all ages, including adults. Children go here to learn game codes, descriptions of the games, as well as how each game is played.

Game sites are also aboard the Internet. A PC newsgroup where game information is offered presumably focuses on specific topics, such as Internet games.
*A child was discovered after missing for eight months beneath a bridge in Unknown, Maryland. The child was lured into meeting the perpetrator offline. The child was Internet savvy, yet failed to adhere to child safety rules while on the Internet. To date the predator who committed this crime has not been caught. We are asking for help in the search to get this person off the streets. What a sad incident!

//-->

While this is only a hypothesis story to get your attention, it breaks my heart to tell you that things such as this, happens everyday. Keep your child safe!

Children nowadays are smarter than parents most times on the computers are. Children today know their way around the Internet better than most adults do. Internet providers have provided tools for parents to safeguard them, yet often these tools are a waste of time, since most children know how to reset the settings.

Children are curious and eager to learn. Children at a young age are developing into adults. These children while developing have needs and wants to need to be met. It does needs and some of the wants are not met, likely, that child will seek attention from anyone that will give attention. Now I can sit here all day long and tell you about tools and strategies to protect your child, yet if you are not filling your child’s needs and some of the wants, all the information I make available to you will serve as no purpose.

The Internet offers children and area to chat with friends, e-mail friends, search information, get assistance with homework, and travel the large highway known as the Internet through browsers. On this major highway are people from the entire world doing the same thing your child is doing, get some of these people are out to cause harm. Some of these people include pedophiles, Cyber Stalkers, hackers, bullies, and so on, in the downside is even murderers and serial killers will use the Internet to capture, imprison, and steal a life!

Are your children listening to you? Are your children getting attention they need so that they will listen to you? It is important that the answer to these questions is yes; otherwise, your child may be in danger.

Steal, if you are barking out rules, you’d better be setting the examples with your own conduct, otherwise your child will not listen, nor will he or she feel that adequate attention exists. One of the fatal mistakes that adults make, is telling children that something is bad without telling them why it is bad, or worse, telling the children something is bad, while conform to the behaviors they are claiming to be bad.

The excuse is often, I am an adult I can do what I want, and you are a child and will listen to me. What a major, major mistake!

Of course as adults, we have more privileges then children do, and these privileges should be explained thoroughly. These privileges doesn’t include engaging in wrongful activities, or listing to and/or viewing harmful materials, including images and content that pose threats to our minds. Therefore, if you want to protect your child learn the rules of the moral laws and follow them yourself, as you set up standards that you and your child can both meet. Do this for you, do this for me because I care about you and your child, but most importantly do this for your child.

*The story under headlines is fabricated, and not intended to cause anyone harm, only make them see how essential it is to abide by rules. A similar incident may have took place in the world, however is not to my awareness that this is true, therefore this story is entirely fabricated, utilized as a hypothesis.

Child Safety and Online Dangers

What can we say about children these days? Polluted television, corrupted Internet sites, contaminated video and board games, and a world lowering its standards, values, and morals each day surround our children.

What’s worse we cannot use Parental Controls anymore to keep our children away from websites in adult nature. Children nowadays are advanced in technology, and sometimes more so than parents. How can we protect our children against online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety to our children, while battling the corruptions going on worldwide?

Parental Controls are available through most Internet software’s, yet today, children are skilled at passing these Parental Controls. What can we do? We can guard our children by monitoring their activities closely on the Internet.

How to use parental controls:
It depends on which Internet provider you have, however, I will speak only of the Internet providers I am aware of, since all programs are different. To use AOL Parental Controls you will need to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls. Once you arrive, you will see a list of usernames available. Search for your child’s username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on Edit Web Control and then click Kids Only, and close. Now your child is guarded against scavenging sites that hold potential dangers.
